Send lithium batteries shipped by air (IATA) with Shipmondo

July 1, 2026

We’ve made it possible to ship lithium batteries by air under IATA’s rules for dangerous goods.

Which lithium batteries can you send?

You can book shipments with parcels containing batteries that fall within IATA section IB and section II. If the batteries fall outside these categories, the shipment can’t be booked through Shipmondo.

Now supported by DHL Express, FedEx and UPS

We support it for DHL Express, and also lithium batteries by air for FedEx and UPS. All three carriers support both IATA section IB and section II.

How is it booked?

A service group has been added where each service refers to one of the two IATA sections. When you select one of the two services, new fields appear under the parcel details:

Lithium batteries (IATA section II) - service code: IATA_II

  • Battery material type: Lithium-ion / Lithium-metal
  • Battery package type: Contained in equipment / packed with equipment

Lithium batteries (IATA section IB) - service code: IATA_IB

  • Battery material type: Lithium-ion / Lithium-metal

Booking via API

Battery material type and battery package type are filled in as attributes under parcels:

Battery material type corresponds to “name”: “battery_material_type”

  • Valid values “value”: “li_ion” or “li_metal”

Battery package type corresponds to “name”: “battery_package_type”

  • Valid values “value”: “contained_in_equipment” or “packed_with_equipment”
