Shopify: Country-specific HS codes on items and new improvements

We’ve expanded how HS codes are handled for dutiable shipments, especially when you ship to different countries outside the EU, where requirements such as the length of tariff codes can vary.

Country-specific tariff codes on items

You can now set country-specific tariff codes (HS codes) on an item in Shipmondo. When a shipment is booked to a country that has a country-specific tariff code configured, that code takes priority over the global tariff code.

This feature is especially relevant for those of you shipping large volumes outside the EU.

Importing HS codes from Shopify

During a full product import through our Shopify integration, we now fetch all configured country-specific HS codes.

Prepaid duties in Shopify

If you use “Collect duties and import taxes at checkout” in Shopify, Shopify automatically generates an HS code to calculate the duties your customer pays at checkout.

This HS code is now automatically transferred to the order line in Shipmondo.

The HS code generated by Shopify takes priority over HS codes set directly on the item, as it is the code your customer’s prepaid duties were calculated from.

When booking these shipments, it is important that you select the correct Incoterm, which tells the carrier and the customs authorities in the destination country that you are responsible for paying any duties, since your customer has already paid them to you. If needed, contact your carrier to agree on how the booking should be handled correctly.

Note! It is important to check that the HS code matches the actual product information. The more relevant and accurate details you fill in about the item in the product fields, the better Shopify can specify the HS code correctly.
