Shipmondo now supports product identifiers on customs commodity lines for shipments to the EU with DHL Express, FedEx, UPS, PostNord, Bring and Generic Carriers.
Shipmondo supports product identifiers on customs commodity lines for shipments to the EU with DHL Express, FedEx, UPS, PostNord, Bring and Generic Carriers. From November 1, 2026, product identifiers must be made available to customs for distance sales of goods imported into the EU. Parcels without correct identifiers may be held and returned to the sender.
Each customs commodity line has three fields:
The fields are optional and only appear on shipments from a country outside the EU to an EU country. In Shipmondo’s web portal, you fill them in under “Edit contents” on the commodity line. All three identifiers are also printed on Shipmondo’s own pro forma invoice under the product description.
DHL Express receives all three identifiers with the booking.
FedEx receives all three identifiers with the booking. FedEx also requires two other things: the Merchant Product ID type field, where you choose what kind of ID the M-PID is (SKU, GTIN, UPC, EAN, MPN, registered number or other), and the receiver’s email address. The M-PID and the ID type belong together, so a shipment with only one of them is rejected with a validation error. If the item has no S-PID, Shipmondo sends “NA” to FedEx.
UPS requires shipments to the EU to be marked as B2B or B2C. Shipments in Shipmondo are B2B by default. The product identifiers only appear when you select the B2C service. B2C cannot be combined with returns.
PostNord receives the identifiers as data on shipments from a country outside the EU to an EU country, for example from Norway to Sweden, Denmark or Finland. This applies to all of PostNord’s customs document types (CN22, CN23 and pro forma invoice). An identifier can be at most 70 characters. PostNord does not print the identifiers on its own documents.
Bring receives the identifiers on Business Parcel, PickUp Parcel and Letter Packet from Norway to an EU country. These are the only Bring products where Bring receives product identifiers, so the fields do not appear on other products. An identifier can be at most 40 characters. The identifiers are not printed on Bring’s own CN23 on the Letter Packet label, which is sent electronically.
For Generic Carriers and “Unspecified carrier”, the identifiers are printed on Shipmondo’s own pro forma invoice. They are not sent to the carrier as data.
The fields do not appear on return products or on products and routes without customs. If an identifier is too long for PostNord or Bring, the shipment is rejected with a validation error, both in the web portal and in the API.
Product identifiers can be set in the API on the customs commodity lines. See the technical details in the changelog on Shipmondo.dev and Product identifiers (PID) for EU import.
Read more about the requirement in the Help Center guide Product identifiers for B2C imports into the EU.
