What is a packing slip?

A packing slip (also known as a delivery note) is a note that usually accompanies an order when it is shipped.

The packing slip provides an overview of the order and the goods that the order contains.

The packing slip may also contain relevant information, such as the customer’s order number and shipping and payment methods.

In this way, your customers can get an overall view of the order and the goods that have been received.

The customer can use the packing slip as a checklist to ensure that they have received the correct items.

What information does a packing slip contain?

A packing slip typically contains information about the order the customer has placed.

This can include the goods that the order contains – that is, the goods that will be delivered – but it may also include those that cannot be delivered at this time, for example, because it is a backorder or similar.

Moreover, it is typical for the packing slip to contain the customer’s information, order number, and delivery form.

As a business owner, it is up to you how your packing slip should look in terms of design.

However, several points are recommended to be included in your packing slip:

  • Seller’s information
  • Buyer’s information
  • Order number
  • Date of issuance of the packing slip
  • Description of goods and possibly SKU
  • Quantity of goods
  • Delivery date and delivery method

What does a packing slip look like?

The packing slip can look in many ways, and you can also tailor it to your business’s identity. There are no rules for how it should look, but it typically contains the above points.

When should you use packing slips?

It may be a good idea to use a packing slip if you run an online store, as it gives both you and the customer an overview of what the package contains and other relevant information about the buyer and seller.

As a business, you can also personalize your packing slip by, for example, inserting your logo on the packing slip.

It is not legally required to include a packing slip, but it can be a very good idea as a service from you to the customer, where it is possible to get an overview of the goods that have been delivered.

What is an invoice and order confirmation?

A packing slip is different from an invoice and order confirmation.

A packing slip typically does not include a price, but both an invoice and order confirmation do.

The customer usually receives an order confirmation shortly after the order is placed. It typically contains the goods that have been ordered, along with the price and any expected delivery time.

In this way, you send confirmation to the customer that you have received the order. Once the order has been processed, packed, and shipped, an invoice is sent.

An invoice is tied to the actual payment for a good. It specifies and demands payment for the goods that were agreed upon in the order.

The invoice can be included in the order, either to charge for the order or to inform the customer that the payment has been completed.

A packing slip, an invoice, and an order confirmation cannot replace each other, as they each have their own purpose.
